Iron is one of the most abundant metals on Earth, it is essential to most life forms and to normal human physiology. Iron is an integral part of many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health. In humans, iron is an indispensable component of proteins involved in oxygen transport. This metal is also an important part of the equation for cell growth and cell differentiation (the process by which a cell becomes specialized in order to perform a specific function). The known affects of having suboptimal iron levels are commonly known as: feeling tired and weak, decreased work and school performance, slow cognitive and social development during childhood. Brittle hair and nails, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, decreased immune function which in turn increases susceptibility to infection.
More so, health care providers often overlook the correlation between iron, brain and behavioral organization (the study of the way people interact within groups) especially when addressing children given the susceptibility of their developing brains. The metal in question is mostly concentrated in a part of the brain called the basal ganglia. This area of the brain is heavily influenced by two common neurotransmitters; dopamine and GABA, responsible in part for attention and impulse disorders, respectively.
Iron deficiency results in poor brain myelination (the formation of myelin sheath around a nerve to allow a nerve impulse to move more swiftly) and disrupts monoamine metabolism (which allows neurotransmitters balance). Growing evidence demonstrate the link between iron-deficient children and increased anxiety and/or depression with social and attentional problems.
Depending on the type of iron form that is suggested, it can have adverse reactions, for example; gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and/or dark colored stools. However, liquid Floradix/Floravit from Flora has a long-standing history of providing us, in my clinical experience, with one of the best bioavailable forms of iron making the side effects that are minimal to none. It is combined with B vitamins and is in a nutrient dense plant juice to improve its digestibility and assimilation all while being Kosher, gluten and yeast free (Floravit), and also suited for vegetarians.
